Uptown Chicago Neighborhood

Uptown was once considered an entertainment destination where Chicagoans would flock to bars, dance halls, restaurants and theaters. Decades after its heyday the party atmosphere has subsided and Uptown’s community culture has been redefined. The great dining scene evolved to incorporate some of the city’s best Asian cuisine and the live stage shows shifted from big band to rock concerts. A number of those long ago venues (such as the Aragon Ballroom and Green Mill Lounge) are still around and continue to attract the masses to Uptown for an unforgettable night on the town.

One of the reasons Uptown was such a hotspot in the early 1900s is its convenient location on the train line directly north of the city center. For awhile it was the last stop on Chicago’s northern edge and subsequently an ideal place to cut loose and have some fun. Today the neighborhood is just as accessible by train. The Red Line L passes through the middle of Uptown, making three stops at Wilson, Lawrence and Argyle. Argyle Street is thee place to go in Chicago for Vietnamese cuisine. The three-block stretch between Broadway and Sheridan is packed with authentic restaurants and ethnic grocery stores. A few Thai and Chinese eateries are thrown in the mix further down Broadway, as well as the occasional pizzeria, Indian café, bar & grill, Ethiopian restaurant, Mexican taqueria, and none-other-than the notable Green Mill jazz club. Formerly a speakeasy owned by Al Capone, the Green Mill is now a famous haunt for top jazz musicians and passionate poetry buffs (check out the Uptown Poetry Slam on Sundays).

Those looking for Uptown condos for sale know the area has a lot to offer, including its inventory of units in vintage courtyard condominiums and beautiful brick residential buildings. The more expensive Uptown condos for sale are mostly half-duplexes (two-level layouts) and penthouses. Many of these residences are three or four bedrooms with high-end finishes and luxury amenities. There are plenty of studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units on the local market as well. The price tags are considerably lower and some properties may need a bit of updating. However, you’ll just as easily find a selection of mid-size Uptown condos for sale that have already been renovated and upgraded to today’s standards.

The neighborhood’s proximity to the lake is another bonus that attracts buyers to Uptown condos for sale. The southern section of the community extends east to Lake Michigan’s shoreline where a long stretch of sandy beach flanks the landscaped parkland. It is a scenic neighborhood refuge set back from the busy city streets and noisy traffic. There are acres of green grass, paved walking/bike paths, public sporting facilities, and easy access to Montrose Harbor.
