Hyde Park and Kenwood have the most high-rise condo buildings of any South Side community, and the twin towers known as the Newport are some of the most impressive buildings in those neighborhoods. The Newport consists of two identical 27-floor residential buildings that were built in 1963 and are located at 4800 S Lake Shore Drive, just across the street from the lakefront and the popular lakefront jogging and bike trail. Residents of the north tower of the Newport enjoy unobstructed city views of Chicago’s downtown skyline, while residents of the south tower have views of Hyde Park, and both towers offer excellent views of the lakefront.
Between the two twin towers, the Newport contains 728 different units that range from studios and one- to three-bedroom units. However, given the large student population in the area, most of the units in the building tend to be on the small side, as the average unit in the Newport is only 535 square feet. Additionally, the average price per square foot is $146, and units in this building tend to stay on the market for 3 to 5 months. Residents in the Newport pay an average of about $200 in monthly assessments, on top of taxes that typically cost about $700 per year.
