Chicago Condo: Lake Point Tower
Building Address:
505 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60611The Lake Point Tower is one of the most prestigious residential buildings in downtown Chicago. The building has three rounded ‘nubs’ that extend from a central axis and make it resemble the Harbor Point Tower, which is about a mile south of the Lake Point Tower and is also located on the lakefront. The other reason that the two buildings are similar in appearance is that they both have black “Miesian” windows (so named because of their widespread use by architect Mies van der Rohe). The Lake Point was built in 1968, and until 1993 it held the world record as the tallest all-residential building in the world. Part of the reason for the unique design is so that every unit in the building has a view of the lake; additionally, most units have excellent cityscape views.
Lake Point Tower is located just east of one of Chicago’s most popular tourist attractions, Navy Pier, in the city’s Streeterville neighborhood, and it is located within walking distance of some of the city’s best shopping and dining districts. Unlike some of the other large condo buildings in the neighborhood, Lake Point Tower offers condos in various sizes, ranging from studios to three-bedroom condos. The price per square foot for a unit in this building tends to cost about $360, and the typical one-bedroom unit ranges from the mid-$300,000s to the low $400,00s, while a three-bedroom condo can cost between $1 million and $1.5 million.
Residents of Lake Point Tower enjoy much more than the views from this impressive building though, as the building offers many luxury amenities that aren’t usually found in other comparable buildings. Among the exclusive building features are a private heath club, an indoor and outdoor pool, and even a private park on the third floor. In addition to those special amenities, there are several small businesses that operate in the building, like a small dry cleaners, a commissary, and even a rooftop gourmet restaurant.
